Merlot is a black grape variety with strong historic ties to Bordeaux and South West France. It has also found success in Chile, particularly in Colchagua, and in Italy and Australia. The precise flavours that Merlot imparts to a wine are not easily grouped - it is used for producing wines of a particular texture, rather than a particular taste, relying on organoleptic properties other than just flavour and aroma. Villa Garros Bordeaux Merlot is a great example, as is Painted Wolf's Black Pack Merlot.
