Spain has a history of winemaking that goes back to 3000 BC, and today has more land under vine than any other country. It's famed for its red wines in particular, from Rioja and further a field, but in recent years has enjoyed success with aromatic white wines, like Verdejo, from the northwest of the country. Bodegas la Emperatriz is a real find - small and yet perfectly formed - this is a single estate Rioja winery, which is a relatively new to the UK wine scene but, with great Guia Penin ratings and Parker points, is already starting to make waves in the wine industry. Further west, Bordeaux vigneron Francois Lurton has ventured into Spain, recognising Rueda and Toro as two areas with great potential. Berberana has established itself as one of Spain's leading producers, with wines from Rioja, Catalunya, Cava and Vino de la Tierra de Castilla.
