Waimea Estates is delighted that once again its wines have hit the headlines. The results of the 2016 Bragato Wine Awards were announced over the weekend with Waimea Pinot Noir 2015 winning Pure Gold. Only the finest wines conforming to sustainability accreditation can be awarded ‘Pure Gold'. Waimea also collected Pure Silver and Bronze Medals for their Waimea Classic Riesling 2015, Waimea Sauvignon Blanc 2016, Waimea Classic Riesling 2014, Waimea Pinot Gris 2015, Spinyback Pinot Gris 2015, Spinyback Sauvignon Blanc 2016 and Spinyback Pinot Noir 2014.
The Bragato Wine Awards is seen by many as the first wine show of the year for the new vintage wines – so in this case 2015 reds and 2016 whites; this is a chance to see how they stack up against other wines in the same class.
Ben Bolitho, Waimea’s General Manager and Viticulturist is delighted with the results. “To go head to head with some of the best single vineyard Pinot Noirs in the country and win Gold is pretty exciting that’s for sure!” Ben is naturally very proud of the Viticulture team. “The Bragato Awards celebrates grape grower excellence and the show recognises the quality of single vineyard sites, and can thus be seen as part of the process of identifying terroir within New Zealand. As can be expected, the show favours growers who make a commitment to the best fruit – and Waimea is proud to be recognised as one of those growers. I want to take this opportunity to say how proud I am of the vineyard team – in particular Nick Webb and Zuam Sang Hme, ably led by our Vineyard Manager Nathan Doherty.”
The brace of Gold Medals hanging around Waimea’s neck is now complete with every one of Waimea’s major winestyles winning one if not multiple Golds in recent years - Waimea Sauvignon Blanc, Waimea Grüner Veltliner, Waimea Sauvignon Gris, Waimea Classic Riesling, Waimea Pinot Gris, Waimea Gewurztraminer, Waimea Trev’s Red and Waimea Albariño.
Waimea’s awards tally now stands at 146 Gold Medals and 26 Trophies and covers eight different wine styles, once again proving Waimea’s and the Nelson region’s consistency across a broad range of wine styles.
